As a designer based in Los Angeles, how does the city influence your creative process and the designs you produce?
Being immersed in nature isn't just a preference, it's essential for me to stay centered and to spark creativity. Lucky for me, California serves up some of the planet's finest natural wonders. Living in Laurel Canyon, the beach is just a 40-minute drive away. And when I'm craving a change of scenery, I can escape to the mountains or desert in just a couple of hours.
Are there any specific neighborhoods or districts in Los Angeles that you find particularly charming or intriguing? Any hidden gems or off-the-beaten-path areas that you love exploring?
Melrose Hill is my go-to spot for gallery hopping, especially along Western Avenue. Sized, the multidisciplinary creative studio, has produced some impressive group shows, showcasing stunning local and international talent. An afternoon in the Arts District downtown is also nice – I love browsing at Artbook, the bookstore at Hauser & Wirth followed by lunch at the best sushi handroll spot Yunomi, capped off with a matcha at Maru.
Los Angeles is known for its diverse array of cultural events, festivals & markets. Any worth checking out?
The Hollywood Bowl hosts some of the best concerts and artists during the summer and it is such a special outdoor venue – I get to see Khruangbin there in August. MOCA, the Museum of Contemporary Art, also hosts an annual Art Book Fair that I try to make it to every August. It is a diverse offering of small and large artists and galleries and always offers quality people watching too.
How do you unwind and recharge in a city as bustling as Los Angeles? Any favorite spas, yoga studios, or walking spots where you escape the hustle and bustle?
Aside from being an artist I also teach breathwork and meditation. It is a beautiful practice that has changed my life and I am always seeking out classes and workshops so that I can continue learning and expanding as a student and not just as a coach. If you ever find yourself in Venice, you must visit Open's studio - by the popular meditation App. Their breathwork, yoga and meditation instructors are the best – Manoj is my personal favorite and his sessions are dynamic and transformative.
If you were to welcome newcomers to the LA scene, where would you bring them to ensure an unforgettable experience?
For an unforgettable LA day I would start at my home for the sunrise with a homemade matcha and some light breathwork. When in the right setting, driving in LA can be magical – I would take them down Mulholland Dr. to the west side and cruise over to the PCH (Pacific Coast Highway). Lunch at Malibu Seafood right on the coast and is quintessential California vibes and they have the most fresh fish. This meal followed by a light hike and the sunset at any beach in Malibu caps off the most dreamy LA day.
When navigating LA's dining and stays scene, what's your special formula for selecting your ultimate favorite restaurant or hotel in the city? Which spots are absolute must-saves?
Whenever friends come to town, I never hesitate to suggest the Santa Monica Proper Hotel, with a 1920’s era-landmark building and new contemporary architecture. The interiors are crafted by Kelly Wearstler and the food is clean and delicious. What truly stands out to me is the top-notch wellness suite and spa, Surya. Martha, who oversees the spa, along with her wonderful team, are true experts in Ayurvedic healing, ensuring that every guest receives a tailored and unforgettable relaxation experience. It's truly the perfect spot for a rejuvenating getaway.
Which lil shops and concept stores in LA would you swear by for finding one-of-a-kind treasures and discovering new trends, philosophies and upcoming products?
OK The Store has always been my top choice for unique gift finds and books. Maimoun also used to be one of my go-to boutiques, but sadly, their physical location has just closed its doors. However, keep your fingers crossed because there's talk of their comeback! In the meantime, you can still explore their one-of-a-kind selection online, spanning clothing, home décor, prints, and beauty goodies. When it comes to art and furniture that will elevate your space, The Future Perfect is unbeatable - I love how they mix exclusive exhibitions from cutting-edge contemporary artists with an eclectic array of contemporary production and gallery pieces.
LA's nightlife is legendary. What's your favorite spot?
I love dancing — since all of the clubs here close at 2am, the underground scene in DTLA is lively and where I prefer to go out. Pattern Bar has consistently good vibes and it’s a good rendezvous if I’m meeting friends. Death & Co in the Arts District often has a queue but for good reason, their cocktail game is unmatched.
If you were planning a day trip outside of LA for a breath of fresh air and new perspectives, where would you suggest venturing to?
Discovering Channel Islands National Park feels like stumbling upon a hidden gem just an hour from LA. Spread across five different islands off the Pacific coast, it's as simple as hopping on a ferry in Ventura. Santa Cruz Island is my personal favorite and is made up of expansive beaches and untamed landscapes, with endless opportunities for hiking, kayaking, and swimming.
