You were born in Crete, but Athens now dances at the heart of your life. What ignites your passion for this vibrant city?
What ignites my passion for Athens is its unparalleled sense of freedom and anarchy, where vibrant life pulses through every street. In recent years, this city has become a living tapestry for both Greek artists and those from abroad, offering a multicultural vibe that fosters creativity and expression. While Crete's freedom is deeply connected to the sea and nature, Athens embodies a freedom to create, develop, and dream big. This dynamic and liberated atmosphere resonates with my roots, blending the natural freedom of Crete with the boundless opportunities of the city.
What are the hippest neighborhoods in the city? If we're picking a hotel for a weekend in Athens, where's the spot? Any tips on standout places to book?
I wouldn’t say the hippest, but I would say the coolest areas in Athens close to the city center, with a cultural vibe, are Koukaki, Petralona, Kypseli, and Keramikos. These neighborhoods have a strong sense of their traditional roots while also embracing a bohemian and artistic culture. I suggest checking out Molonglo Athens for accommodations, and keep an eye out for the 10AM lofts, which will open for accommodation in 2025.
Athens is a cultural kaleidoscope. Which restaurants and bars are your go-tos for mingling with friends and meeting fascinating new people? And when it’s time to dive into the nightlife, where do you let loose and dance until dawn?
Some of my favorite restaurants include Taverna ton Filon, Pharaoh, Wine Is Fine, Oikonomou Taverna, Kanaria Taverna, Diporto Taverna, Skalakia Taverna and Yperokeanio in Piraeus. For nightlife, the new hotspot ANGIE is where you can dance all night. For drinks and mingling, Galaxy, Au Revoir, and Santa Rosa are my top picks. For the best crepes, Au Grand Zinc is a must-visit.
Your projects are all about design, art, and events. What are your secret favorite spots in Athens, from hidden art galleries and quirky artist studios to must-see museums?
For galleries, I recommend Melas Martinos, The Breeder, Eleftheria Tseliou Gallery, Gagosian Athens, Intermission, and Sylvia Kouvali - each of these galleries offers a unique perspective on contemporary art, showcasing works ranging from emerging artists to internationally renowned figures. As for museums, the Goulandris Museum of Contemporary Art, Cycladic Art Museum, Benaki Museum, National Museum of Contemporary Art, and the Acropolis Museum are must-visits. For cultural centers, the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center offers a remarkable experience with its diverse range of cultural events and activities.. Last but not least Alkinois Art Space.
If we were to visit you in Athens, where would you take us to uncover the city’s true, off-the-beaten-path charm?
I'd take you to Anafiotika, a picturesque neighborhood under the Acropolis that feels like a Greek island village. We'd also explore Filopappou Hill for its serene atmosphere and panoramic views, wander through the quieter corners of Plaka, and visit the ancient market at Monastiraki and Varvakeios Agora for an authentic taste of local life. On Saturday mornings, we’d head to Kallidromiou Street for its vibrant farmers market, where you can find everything from fresh produce to beautiful flowers, capturing the essence of local Athenian life.
Your project also features the fabulous concept store, 1OAM apotheke. What other shops and boutiques in Athens do you adore?
Some of my favorite spots include Lindo for pastries, Adad Books for unique reads, Stani for Greek yogurt and honey, Diporto for its hidden gem taverna experience, Cine Paris for the best open air cinema, and Eclectica Gallery in Plaka for eclectic finds.
Athens is brimming with both modern flair and ancient wonder. What are your recommended strolls through historic ruins, jaw-dropping sunset spot, or enchanting old streets that everyone should experience at least once?
Exploring the ancient market at Monastiraki, and nothing beats watching the sunset from the Acropolis.
Having grown up on an island, the sea must be in your soul. Where do you dash off to for a refreshing seaside escape from the urban buzz?
The sea is indeed my sanctuary, and I spend every weekend there, rain or shine, on a little hidden beach near Sounio and the Temple of Poseidon. Within the next couple of months, I will be relocating from my house at 10AM lofts to a house by the sea.
