Intro

There are lands you have never heard of and seem born out of fantasies. Come rain or shine, these places exude different energies: that of untouched territories, frozen in time and space, patiently waiting to be discovered. These places prefer to be uncovered gradually by travellers, those fearless to face nature and eager to learn the authentic way: experiencing firsthand.

There are lands that seem born out of fantasies. Come rain or shine, these places radiate different energies, waiting to be slowly explored by travellers eager for firsthand experiences. Patagonia, the land of the four elements, has always lured travellers to what seems to be nearly the end of the world. Located at the base of South America, Patagonia is a geographical region spanning the lower sections of Argentina and Chile. As split between two democratic republics, be sure to have all visas and paperwork ready as you will cross borders multiple times. Given its position, the best season to visit is from December to March if you wish for good weather. Patagonia is better on the road, and there are plenty of services (starting from the airports) to rent your house on wheels or even just a car to move around. Now pack and go!

puerto-varas-chile

Puerto Varas (Chile)

Landing in Puerto Montt, Chile, it's just a quick thirty-minute drive to Puerto Varas, the perfect getaway to start your Patagonian adventure. Surrounded by serene lakes and stunning natural attractions, Puerto Varas opens the door to visit the majestic Osorno Volcano, an iconic symbol of Chilean Patagonia. With its snow-capped peak visible year-round, transforming into a ski slope during winter, Osorno not only dominates the landscape but turns every view into a postcard scene. After your long flight and a day of exploration, you might crave some relaxation. Head to Hotel Cumbre for a stay that blends traditional hacienda charm with modern comfort. Go for the cosy feels, spa, and pools, and stay for the noteworthy Lago Llanquihue sightseeing. Make the most of the hotel's all-embracing windows to watch the sunset, casting its golden glow over the lake at around 10:00 or 10:30 p.m., then drift to sleep, likely feeling both awe-struck and refreshed, ready for the next day’s discoveries.

Villa La Angostura and San Carlos de Bariloche (Argentina)

After leaving Puerto Varas, set out for San Carlos de Bariloche, a must-visit gem in Argentina's Lake District. The six-hour drive takes you across the border into Argentina, where you'll encounter the iconic Ruta 40, affectionately called La Cuarenta by Patagonians. Much like the famed Route 66, Ruta 40 stretches alongside the Andes for over 500 kilometres, offering breathtaking views at every turn. As you drive, shimmering lakes will present unforgettable panoramas, sometimes flanking both sides of the road,. Before reaching Bariloche, stop at Villa La Angostura, known as the garden of Patagonia. The road leading there is picturesque, lined with vibrant lavender and mimosa trees. Once in San Carlos de Bariloche, you will be surprised by its curiously Swiss outlook. Stroll along the shores of the Nahuel Huapi Lake and taste the oh-so-yummy chocolate bars. You might even forget to be in South America for a while.

llao-llao-argentina

Llao Llao (Argentina)

After exploring Villa La Angostura and Bariloche, take a short 15-minute drive to Llao Lao to end the day. Be sure to book your stay at the Llao Llao Resort well in advance. This paradise offers accommodations that feel like luxurious suites, with exceptional food and an inviting atmosphere. The resort organises a variety of activities throughout the year, both indoors and outdoors, depending on the season. Whether you're interested in boating, fishing, rafting, bird watching, windsurfing, canoeing, or fly casting, you'll find plenty of options to suit your interests.

Futelafù (Chile)

As the renowned poet Antonio Machado once said, “Traveller, there is no path; the path is made by walking.” Patagonia embodies this sentiment perfectly, offering journeys that unfold as you explore its untamed beauty. Long drives are part of the adventure, and nice playlists playing in the background are essential. After enjoying the scenic Llao Llao, continue driving for four more hours to reach Futaleufú, a premier destination for rafting enthusiasts. Remember that all rafting excursions require a guide, so check availability beforehand. Yet, Futaleufú offers more than just thrilling whitewater. It’s a stunning valley with lush vegetation, vibrant cobalt streams, and rivers. The hiking trails here are exceptional; consider horseback riding to access higher - often hidden - trails. The valley is dotted with cosy lodges, and Uman Lodge stands out as a top-tier choice, especially during the winter season. If you visit around Christmas, the festive atmosphere adds to the charm, while the indoor and outdoor pools complete your experience.

puyuhuapi-and-ventisquero-colgante-chile

Puyuhuapi and Ventisquero Colgante (Chile)

Puyuhuapi is a fish town village on the long Carretera Austral, a scenic, rugged and remote highway winding through Chilean Patagonia. Puyuhuapi is probably the only populated town in a long while. To immerse yourself in the serene nature of this remote world, consider exploring the off-grid experiences at Puyuhuapi Lodge Spa. To reach this secluded haven, you'll first park your car or van in a designated area. From there, a small boat will transport you to your destination. The lodge is located on a tiny island right amidst the fjords and three types of water converge here: seawater, waterfall and thermal water. Once you arrive, leave behind the hustle of modern life - there's no internet connection here, so take your time and savour the experience. Canoeing is a must, as much as bathing in the invigoratingly cold waters. If you're fortunate, you might even get to swim with dolphins. Cap off your day by relaxing in the natural thermal waters while enjoying a glass of fine wine, surrounded by the beauty of the landscape. The next day, set the alarm quite early and venture to Ventisquero Colgate, an unmissable spot on your itinerary. If you think you have seen it all, here you will witness the glacier, namely an iced waterfall slowly melting.

rio-tranquilo-and-puerto-bertrand-chile

Rio Tranquilo and Puerto Bertrand (Chile)

There is no denying that Patagonia is a visual tale, brimming with awe-inspiring landscapes. However, some of these remain hidden and lesser known, a quiet refuge far from the crowds. One of these is the marble caves located near the tiny village of Puerto Rio Tranquilo. Nature has been the sculptor here, carving these marble cathedrals over 6,000 years, shaped by the wind and waves. The only way to explore these surreal formations is by speedboat or a half-day kayak trip. The result is truly breathtaking, as the marble arches shift in colour, reflecting the crystal-clear waters and taking on hues of blue, pink, yellow, and green. To break up the long road trip, we recommend a stop in Puerto Bertrand. This charming village along the shores of the turquoise Lake Bertrand, is a paradise for fishermen and nature enthusiasts alike. Its crystal-clear waters invite not only anglers but also adventurers looking to experience rafting and other outdoor activities. Surrounded by dramatic landscapes, Puerto Bertrand offers the perfect setting to relax and recharge while soaking in Patagonia's untamed beauty.

parque-nacional-patagonia-argentina

Parque Nacional Patagonia (Argentina)

On your way to El Calafate, consider a detour to Parque Nacional Patagonia. This scenic route is one of the most rewarding parts of the journey, offering a breathtaking glimpse of Patagonia’s raw beauty. The park is filled with trekking trails, ice hiking opportunities, and wide-open landscapes where wild horses roam freely, all against a backdrop of stunning vistas. The unspoiled wilderness is also a sanctuary for endangered species, making it a haven for nature lovers. As you continue towards El Calafate, you can choose to stop at La Angostura. Even if the destination is not so picturesque it offers a nice way to lay down and rest during the long trip.

El Calafate and El Chalten (Argentina)

As you venture further south, head towards El Calafate and El Chaltén. Keep an eye out on the road - you might just spot a puma. These two small towns serve as gateways to the majestic Los Glaciares National Park. From here, you can visit the renowned Perito Moreno Glacier, one of the most famous glaciers in the world, and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Remarkably, it is still growing to this day. Hiking on Perito Moreno is an unforgettable experience, but if you're not feeling adventurous, there are plenty of other ways to enjoy its grandeur. Several lookouts offer breathtaking views where you can witness ice ruptures, or you can kayak along the glacier’s edge, take a boat trip, and even enjoy a meal at a nearby restaurant with unexpected panoramic lunch views.

torres-del-paine-chile

Torres del Paine (Chile)

Just four hours further south lies Torres del Paine, one of the most breathtaking national parks in Patagonia, named after the three iconic peaks that dominate its skyline. Known as a hiker's paradise, the park offers trails that range from 5 to 9 days, showcasing the raw beauty of Patagonia. Kau Rio Serrano is an ideal place to gaze at nature unfolding before your eyes. Considered too good to be located “at the end of the world”, its minimal design leaves all the space to the surroundings to become the best furniture. Fall asleep under a starry blue sky and wake up to the sight of snow-capped peaks.

punta-arenas-chile

Punta Arenas (Chile)

The collateral beauty of too much nature could be a desire to reconnect with society and look for some cultural hubs. Punta Arenas is the most populated city on this side of the world and is located on the Strait of Magellan. For this very reason, the city has been an important harbor ever since and called for waves of immigration. Today is an eclectic mix of cultures and architecture, but it offers some nice plazas (even one celebrating Magellan), a Maritime museum and a regional one. A shot from Punta Arenas is Isla Magdalena, the place to see all the penguins you have ever dreamed of seeing.

ushuaia-argentina

Ushuaia (Argentina)

If time allows, journey to the end of the world: Ushuaia, the southernmost city on the planet. Located in the Tierra del Fuego archipelago, the diverse mix of cultures in this remote outpost might make you want to stay longer. Here, you can cruise the Beagle Channel to spot sea lions, sail through surreal landscapes on a catamaran, or ride the famed End of the World Train. But most importantly, if your journey ends here, it’s your final chance to take it all in and leave Patagonia with a heart - and suitcase - full of more than you ever expected.

keep-handy

Keep handy

Patagonia is a mesmerising land, a restoring presence that can take you out of the modern system and plunge you into a unique atmosphere. To prepare for your trip keep these handy and don’t forget to follow your heart along the journey:

  • Have all your documents, visas and paperwork ready to cross borders.

  • Hiking shoes are a must. Make sure you are comfortable in your steps everywhere you go.

  • South Pacific Ocean, Southern Ocean and the Andes embrace Patagonia. Combined they produce strong winds cooling the temperatures, making its climate slightly different from the rest of South America. Make friends with the ever howling wind: Patagonia’s soundtrack. It is probably the first thing you notice upon arrival and the last whisper you will hear before leaving. Make plans accordingly and consider it can also influence your long car drives.

  • Plan ahead of time. Weather is unpredictable with sudden shifts, pack wisely and always bring a windbreaker. Additionally, many lodges, hotels, and B&Bs operate seasonally, so check availability well in advance.

  • Be mindful of backpackers and cyclists. Patagonia is home to backpackers, cyclists, and hitchhikers. Drive carefully and, if possible, offer a lift to locals or fellow travellers - they may genuinely need your help in this remote part of the world

  • While planning is essential, leave room for spontaneity. Let your instincts guide you, and you’ll discover the magic of Patagonia. This land challenges you, but it rewards you with an inebriating sense of peace, making you feel deeply alive and grateful to be so far removed from modern life.
